What Are My Tummy Tuck Options?
Traditional Tummy Tuck
A traditional tummy tuck is best for patients who have excess tissue, fat, and stretch marks on their upper and lower abdomen. It is also performed to repair abdominal muscles that have separated down the midline due to pregnancy (known as diastasis recti). Also called a full abdominoplasty, a traditional tummy tuck eliminates loose skin and pockets of fat, leaving you with a more contoured waistline.
Mini Tummy Tuck
Mini tummy tucks treat patients with poor skin elasticity and localized fat below the belly button. It is typically used to get rid of a lower tummy “pooch” that won’t respond to diet and exercise, as well as to eliminate stretch marks in that area.
Extended Tummy Tuck
An extended tummy tuck is best for patients with excess skin after major weight loss, often following bariatric surgery. The sagging skin may extend to the hips and back, requiring more extensive correction and longer or additional incisions.

Dr. Wald will provide you with specific pre-operative instructions for your tummy tuck surgery, but in general, you will need to do the following:
- Stop smoking at least two weeks before your tummy tuck
- Refrain from using blood-thinning medications (including ibuprofen)
- Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you to and from surgery, as well as stay with you for the first 24 hours after you get home
- Prepare a recovery area in your home with everything you need in easy reach (pillows for extra support, electronics and chargers, medications, water, and snacks)
- Fill any prescriptions ahead of time and buy any incision care supplies you may need
- Arrange for help as needed, as you won’t be able to drive, lift anything heavy, or engage in regular activities for a week or more
Doing as much as you can to prepare for your tummy tuck recovery before your surgery will make it easier on you in the long run.
